DEC says no cleanup necessary for Victor plume Steve Orr Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (NY) October 15, 2009Two-and-a-half years after a public uproar in Victor over a contaminated plume of groundwater, state officials have concluded that the level of toxic solvents is low enough, and the threat minimal enough, that no cleanup is needed. AdvertisementIn a proposed remedial action plan that has been mailed to residents and town officials, the state Department of Environmental Conservation noted that many homes have been connected to piped-in public water and outfitted with special ventilation systems, which DEC officials believe will eliminate any chance of public exposure to chemical-tainted well water or vapors. "We've aggressively pursued the necessary action to prevent the public from having exposure to the contamination," said DEC spokeswoman Maureen Wren. The agency's preferred path is to monitor the solvents, including trichloroethene, or TCE, to make sure their concentrations in groundwater continue to decline. ...
