New direction for an old redevelopment hope in Somerville

Heaps of dirt-covered metallic junk dotted a section of the borough's 
former landfill recently, where heavy machinery was digging test pits to 
determine what's in the ground.

Officials hope environmental studies there eventually lead to remediated 
open space, roads and new residential, office and retail construction 
that would create much-needed tax revenue. The road to that goal has 
taken as many turns as the paths that lead around the landfill's drab 
brush, polluted wetlands and high hills.

The focus now is on what the municipality can do — such as addressing 
environmental unknowns — to make the site more attractive to developers. 
Critical to that approach is the site's recent designation as a 
Brownfield Development Area by the state Department of Environmental 
Protection, which officials say opens the door to millions in potential 
funding.

But officials caution that actual construction still remains years away.
