Funds delayed on tainted site cleanup By Ann DeMatteo New Haven Register (CT) October 27, 2009HAMDEN - A federal budget delay will postpone the start of the first phase of cleaning up contaminated property on Goodrich Street. The cleanup was to begin around Nov. 1, but now won’t start until later in the month, according to Dale Kroop, director of economic and community development. Kroop and other local, state and federal officials spoke to residents last week about what would be going on at the former Globe Metal Finishing Inc. plant at 386-400 Goodrich St. and 55 Daisy St. in New Haven. The Hamden Economic Development Corp. has received an Environmental Protection Agency brownfields cleanup grant of $373,000 through the Regional Growth Partnership to remove underground storage tanks, metals, and cyanide beneath the slab and other chemicals in the soil, including arsenic and lead. The EPA will first fence off the building and then drain the basement of contaminated water and debris. ...
