VX loses bid to avoid court By David Wren MYrtle Beach Sun News (SC) February 23, 2010A federal judge on Monday denied Myrtle Beach-based AVX Corp.'s claim that toxic contamination spreading from the manufacturer's headquarters has not created a financial hardship for adjacent property owner Horry Land Co. ...AVX is accused of polluting groundwater near its 17th Avenue South headquarters with trichloroethylene, or TCE, which is an industrial degreaser that has been linked to cancer and other health problems. Some of that pollution has spread to about 30 acres of vacant property that Horry Land owns across the street from the manufacturer. Horry Land has said in court documents that the pollution has made its property worthless. Horry Land wants AVX to pay at least $5.4 million in compensation for the property in addition to unspecified punitive damages. AVX, which makes electronic components, has said that Horry Land does not deserve any money because the pollution eventually can be removed from the groundwater. ...
