Interest in old Ensley Works renews as industrial site By Michael Tomberlin Birmingham News (AL) March 21, 2010The decaying smokestacks that stand as a reminder of the 600-acre former Ensley Works' once glorious past today cast a pall over the community in need of jobs, investment and opportunity. With the city running out of industrial sites, Ensley Works is getting a fresh look from Birmingham's new mayor. "We are in dire need of expanded industrial space," Mayor William Bell said in an interview. "We are re-visiting the old Ensley Steel site." Bell's hopes could be gaining steam with a railroad renaissance taking place in Birmingham and across the country. Federal money available for any needed environmental cleanup could also stoke the fire for finally tackling the Ensley Works. ...
