Whirlpool plant sale in Oxford a local lesson?

A former Whirlpool cooking products plant in Oxford, Miss., whose March 
2009 closure affirmed the company's continued presence in Cleveland, has 
been sold to the University of Mississippi for $3.4 million.

The manufacturing facility sits on a 69-acre tract adjacent to the 
college campus.

Although many felt the college was a logical buyer for the facility, 
other economic development officials had hoped another manufacturer 
might be interested in order to create new jobs and expand the tax base.

Regional news outlets quoting Larry Sparks, vice chancellor for finance 
and administration at the university, reported the school doesn't have 
immediate plans for the site but the long-term vision for the 
manufacturing facility is another matter.
