Mired in bureaucracy, questionable soil'Disconnect' - Rules, jurisdiction can impede flow of info about mine contamination from state to local entities By EVE BYRON Helena Independent Record (MT) January 30, 2011An apparent disconnect between state and Lewis and Clark County officials, which almost allowed a subdivision to be approved last week without consideration of reports of high levels of arsenic and lead in the soils, highlights concerns among those charged with protecting human health in the Treasure State. ...An estimated 6,000 abandoned or inactive hard rock mine and milling sites exist throughout Montana. These sites can have elevated levels of arsenic, a known carcinogen. They may house high levels of lead, which can damage children's brains and nervous systems and cause nerve disorders and other problems in adults. They can store mercury, zinc, cadmium, copper and a host of other heavy metals that cause health problems. ...
