Purchase of Norris Elementary now 'way on the back burner'

Plans by Child and Family Services of Northwest Michigan to acquire the 
former Norris Elementary School building on Cherry Bend Road at M-22 (S. 
West Bay Shore Drive) remain "way on the back burner," according to 
agency director Jim Scherrer of Northport.

Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) director of finance and 
operations, Paul Soma, said that for now TCAPS will continue leasing the 
school building on a month-to-month basis to the North Star Soccer club 
that uses the school's gymnasium. Also, an auction services firm uses 
part of the building for storage and office space.

The property next door to the Norris School building is the former site 
of the Grand Traverse Overall Supply Company which was designated a 
federal Superfund site. A cleanup program has been under way using 
federal funds. Groundwater and soil contaminated by dry cleaning 
chemicals used on the site beginning in the 1950’s through the 1980’s 
has affected the waters of West Grand Traverse Bay. New wells were 
provided for Norris Elementary School, and a vapor extraction system was 
installed to keep the school building safe and habitable.
