Toxic Gases Found Beneath, but not Inside, Homes

Testing Latest Step in Township's Legal Fight over Kidde Property  
Contamination

Tests last month on Roosevelt Avenue revealed the presence of  
vaporous toxic chemicals below -- but not within --- two homes,  
results which township officials said will be used as evidence in  
ongoing litigation against the owners of a nearby industrial site.

Speaking during last night’s meeting of the Belleville Township  
Council, Robert Zelley, a geologist hired by the township, said that  
amounts of a compound known as TCE were above the "screening level"  
established by the state Department of Environmental Protection. A  
number of the street’s residents were in the audience last night.

In mid-March, Zelley's firm installed equipment at the two houses to  
capture any gases emanating from below. Those tests showed that TCE  
and other gases were found underneath basement slabs but were not in  
the air at those homes.
