Prime Port land eyed for clearing National Grid submits request to demolish riverside buildings By Lynne Hendricks Newburyport Daily News (MA) May 5, 2011NEWBURYPORT - A proposal by National Grid to raze five of its six Water Street buildings has raised questions of whether the waterfront property is being prepared for sale. National Grid told the Conservation Commission this week that the buildings - which include a maintenance facility, a small operations building, an office, a trailer and a storage shed - are no longer needed to support the company's waterfront substation. Located between the U.S. Coast Guard Station and American Yacht Club, the electric com-pany's riverside parcel is a stone's throw from property owned by developer Stephen Karp that's reportedly being eyed for future development, including the city's first waterfront hotel. The 3-acre parcel is one of the largest privately owned pieces of land along the city's waterfront. ...
