N.J. to shut down state initiative intended to help clean up
'brownfields'
By Christopher Baxter Newark Star-Ledger (NJ) June 2, 2011TRENTON - A state fund to help communities and developers clean up contaminated properties known as brownfields has been shut down after running out of money, officials told a Senate panel today. The state cannot afford $71 million worth of projects awaiting approval, and no new applications will be considered until the backlog is cleared, said Irene Kropp, deputy commissioner for the Department of Environmental Protection. The state Economic Development Authority and the environmental agency, which jointly oversee the fund, declined to disclose the number of projects backlogged and where they are situated.
