Wavering on waste: Environmentalists question toxic site reuse Bob Makin My Central Jersey June 25, 2011Environmentalists, government officials and developers continually work together to turn Central Jersey brownfields into green fields and Superfund sites into super fun sites. Examples include the federally regulated Superfund site Chemical Insecticide Corp. in Edison, which once spawned green rabbits and now is a Green Acres- protected park. A portion of the American Cyanamid Superfund site in Bridgewater now is TD Bank Ballpark, home to the champion Somerset Patriots baseball team. Among the toxic sites in development are two state-regulated brownfields across the Raritan River from each other in Sayreville and Woodbridge that are expected to create jobs, recreational uses and much-needed taxes for their communities. But environmentalists have expressed alarm at what they say are questionable recommendations and actions by the state Department of Environmental Protection, as well as public health concerns related to the reuse of the Sayreville and other Central Jersey toxic sites. ...
