Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] TCE Assessment Finalized |
Please excuse duplicate postings.U.S. EPA has just released the final Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) Assessment for trichloroethylene. The Assessment is available on line at http://www.epa.gov/ncea/iris/subst/0199.htm. It establishes for the first time official risk values for both cancer and non-cancer risk for both oral and inhalation exposures. TCE is one of the most common contaminants at federal and civilian Superfund and other hazardous waste sites. I believe the new Assessment will lead directly to more protective exposure standards for vapor intrusion, and it is also likely to cause the re-evaluation and possibly lowering of the drinking water standard for TCE, often used as a remedial action objective for groundwater cleanup. As Joe Biden would say, this is a big deal! For a little history on the development of the TCE IRIS Assessment, see http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/jsass/epa_finalizes_long- delayed_tce.html Monday night I posted a letter, signed by activists across the country, asking that the Assessment be immediately released.
