Cotter mill cleanup focus of public meeting

CANON CITY - The latest developments at the Cotter Uranium Mill will  
be the subject of a public meeting with state and federal health  
officials Wednesday in Canon City.

The Cotter mill opened in 1958, using an alkaline-leach process to  
extract uranium from ore to make "yellowcake" for the nuclear power  
industry. In 1984, the Cotter mill site and a portion of the  
surrounding Lincoln Park neighborhood were listed as an EPA Superfund  
site because contamination from old unlined tailings ponds seeped  
into the ground water.

The mill has operated off and on since then but has been closed since  
2005. Workers are currently demolishing old mill buildings and  
gauging the financial feasibility of building a new mill at the site.

According to a July report generated for Cotter by an environmental  
consultant, trichloroethene has been detected in ground water at  
levels that exceed EPA limits. The report also said the source of the  
TCE contamination has not been identified.
