State DEP continues to monitor dump site

BYRAM - A health assessment of the Mansfield Trail Dump Superfund  
Site, which previously was found to be the source of contamination of  
18 homes on Brookwood and Ross roads, has determined that a chemical  
solvent found in the groundwater of wells attached to the homes does  
not pose a health hazard as long as properly designed filtering  
systems are installed and maintained.

That conclusion was based on a joint analysis conducted by the state  
Department of Health and the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and  
Disease Registry following the recent removal of more than 11,000  
tons of contaminated soil from the site over a two-month period that  
ended this past June.

The analysis determined that the chemical solvent trichloroethylene  
(TCE), a volatile organic compound, could be safely removed by the  
attachment of so-called point-of-entry treatment (POET) systems to  
drinking water wells. The systems typically make use of a carbon  
filtration process that removes contaminants from drinking water  
immediately prior to the water's entry into the pipes leading into a  
home.
