State: Groundwater near Coulbourne Woods contaminated decades ago By Jennifer Shutt Delmarva Now (MD) April 30, 2013 SALISBURY - When homes in the Coulbourne Woods and Morris Mill subdivisions were built in the early 1990s, it's likely the water they drank and bathed in was already tainted with an industrial solvent, according to state environmental officials. During a public meeting Tuesday night, Art O'Connell, from the Maryland Department of the Environment's land management division, told community members trichloroethylene most likely got into the water supply pre-1980s when a former farm used untreated human refuse as fertilizer. The nonflammable, colorless liquid is primarily used as a solvent to remove grease from metal, but can also be used in paint removers and adhesives.
