DeLand expands Country Club brownfield By Anthony DeFeo Daytona Beach News-Journal (FL) December 2, 2013DELAND - City commissioners unanimously passed a resolution on first reading Monday night designating a brownfield district on property near the former DeLand Country Club. Lake Mary-based Tailwinds Development received final approval Nov. 17 to redevelop the former golf course into a mixed-use development that could feature up to 237 homes, 120,000 square feet of new retail space, 20,000 square feet of office space and a 120-bed assisted living facility. Dieldrin, a once-common pesticide now known to be a health hazard, was used on the golf course several decades ago, making development on the area complicated. The brownfield designation will allow the developers to work with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to clean up the property, with the help of state grants and other forms of assistance. ...
