Minnesota Brownfields group eases cleanup process by Dan Emerson Finance and Commerce (MN) December 6, 2013In recent years, the city of Duluth has been redeveloping its Canal Park commercial business district, transforming a former industrial area into a trendy retail, commercial and restaurant area. It took a while to finish the job because one remaining industrial site sat vacant and polluted for years. Because of the financial risk involved in cleaning up the "toxic soup" on the former dump and auto junk yard, "banks wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole," said Rockie Kavajecz, a co-owner of Canal Park Brewing, which opened about a year ago on the 18,600-square-foot site. The cleanup finally got done with the help of Minnesota Brownfields, a St. Paul-based nonprofit that promotes the voluntary investigation, cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated sites throughout the state. The Canal Park redevelopment was one of four projects recently honored by the Minnesota Brownfields' second annual ReScape Awards. ...
