New Belgium site shapes up; comment on brownfield

ASHEVILLE — As work continues to prepare the site for the New Belgium brewery, the state is taking public comment on a brownfields agreement with the company.

The agreement spells out the uses for the 19.8-acre site and also any measures needed "to protect public health and the environment."

The brewery, set to open in 2015 in the River Arts District, will produce 500,000 barrels of beer annually and employee 140 workers between the brewery and a distribution center.

A brownfield site involves property where redevelopment is "hindered by real or perceived contamination," said Tracy Wahl, brownfields project manager for the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
