Expert urges DEC transparency in releasing findings of contaminants dumped at New York Air Brake site By CRAIG FOX Watertown Daily Times (NY) April 9, 2015 WATERTOWN - A nationally known environmental activist has urged state officials to be more forthcoming with the public on their findings regarding contaminants dumped decades ago from the former New York Air Brake plant. Lenny Siegel, executive director of the California-based Center for Public Environmental Oversight, said Wednesday night that persistent public mistrust could be alleviated by state Department of Environmental Conservation officials providing more information about their findings. Mr. Siegel, an environmental activist for more than 30 years, spoke to about 20 people at an informational meeting at the Savory Downtown restaurant. He was invited to speak here by Andrew G. Williams, who grew up on East Division Street but now lives on Washington Street. Mr. Williams has called for more testing on the north side after learning about some lingering pollutants that presumably came from the Starbuck Avenue site. “I can’t say how much testing they’ve done, but I am certain they haven’t done enough to get the information out there,” Mr. Siegel said. “Obviously, people have concerns. It behooves them to be more transparent.” … For the entire article, see http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/news03/expert-urges-dec-transparency-in-releasing-findings-of-contaminants-dumped-at-new-york-air-brake-site-20150408 -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Brownfields mailing list Brownfields@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/brownfields-cpeo.org | |
