Future of closed Parks Township plant up to state By Mary Ann Thomas Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (PA) June 5, 2015 The owner of the former plutonium plant on Route 66 in Parks Township wants state approval to bring the site up to standards for future commercial development. The buildings, which were the first large commercial plutonium fuel plant, in the country, have long been demolished and cleared of radioactive contamination. But the chemical contamination remains. The owner of the 70-acre site, BWX Technologies, of Lynchburg, Va., submitted a risk assessment study to the state, which is expected to comment on its plan in several weeks, according to John Poister, spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection.
