Whirlpool Releases Quarterly Report On Fort Smith Contamination Cleanup

The latest report on cleanup efforts at the former Whirlpool plant in Fort Smith describes a majority of monitoring site locations as experiencing “generally stable to decreasing trends” of underground contamination.

A portion of Whirlpool Corp.’s sprawling property on Jenny Lind Road has been contaminated with trichloroethylene, or TCE, since at least 1989 when it was discovered at the site, according to Whirlpool’s environmental consulting firm, Environ. The toxic chemical was later discovered underneath a nearby neighborhood.

Whirlpool, which closed its Fort Smith plant in 2012, is in the midst of a state-approved cleanup plan that began in March 2014 with the treatment of contaminated groundwater with a chemical oxidant. Cleanup strategies also included the removal of toxic soil.

Released Friday, a 1,300-page quarterly report from Whirlpool to the city and Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality explains in detail monitoring and sampling efforts from April through June. It notes “generally stable to decreasing trends for TCE concentrations at a majority of monitoring well locations.”
