EPA brownfield grant a good first step toward Pelzer restoration By Don Fujiwara GSA Business (SC) August 18, 2015 In northeastern Anderson County, the small town of Pelzer clutches the green ribbon of the Saluda River, a winding line marking where Anderson County ends and Greenville County begins. Over the years, the town has struggled to shed the lasting environmental and economic legacy of the region’s textile industry, but recently a group of ‘mill hill kids’ — people born and raised in Pelzer, who still remember its glory days — have organized to save and preserve the town’s heritage. Part of that means putting in a whole lot of work to restore the town’s prominence and cement its place in a sweeping project that stands to benefit not only the town, but also Anderson County and the broader Upstate. The fruit of their labor, the nonprofit Pelzer Heritage Commission, was awarded $400,000 in brownfield cleanup grants by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Two $200,000 grants will go toward the planned cleanup of two parcels encompassing 14 acres just north of town proper, land that had served as the dumping ground for the old Pelzer Mill for upward of a century. … For the entire article, see http://gsabusiness.com/news/55423-epa-grant-a-first-step-toward-pelzer-restoration -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Brownfields mailing list Brownfields@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/brownfields-cpeo.org | |
