Book tells the story of 'Tombstone Town' by Ralph E. Wirtz Midland Daily News December 29, 2015In a small town in mid-Michigan, a tombstone sat behind a chain-link fence for 31 years on the banks of the Pine River, warning residents of the toxic dangers that lurked just below the surface. Why the tombstone was needed is a question for the ages, since all of the people who live in St. Louis, in Gratiot County and in mid- Michigan knew the property once owned by the Michigan Chemical Co. was filthy with DDT, PBBs and a host of other chemicals, some of which seeped into the adjacent river that has been the site of a 17- year Environmental Protection Agency clean up. That tombstone and the resulting clean-up is the topic of a new book by activist Jane Keon, a St. Louis resident who for 12 years was the head of the St. Louis Community Action Group, an organization that brought pressure on the EPA and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to restore the river and the property after it was formed in 1997. ...
