Salon dream gets a boost

A long-vacant gas station in Hazel Crest is the home of a dream for Octavia Hooks.

Where some see a brownfield site, the Country Club Hills woman envisions a natural hair care salon and perhaps an urban farm with beekeeping and maybe wine-making capabilities.

Hooks, 45, has taken some small, early steps toward realizing her dream. In November, she won an estimated $4,000 in seed funding at a live, crowd-funded "pitch fest" in Chicago — money that she hopes will lead to more investment because she believes she will need at least $750,000 for the project.
