Hancock turned down for cleanup aid for tannery site

HAYCOCK - Federal officials turned down Hancock’s application for $400,000 to clean up the now defunct Hancock Ellsworth Tannery, but the town was encouraged to reapply.

The brownfield - which is property left contaminated by industrial or commercial operations - is part of a 151-acre site at the junction of routes 1 and 182.

It is the largest such contaminated site in Hancock, although most of it - 134 acres - does not appear to be affected by tannery wastes.

Tom Martin, executive director of the Hancock County Planning Commission, assisted the town in applying for the grant and said he will reapply in the fall.
