Plans for Palouse brownfield site move forward
City makes progress on 11-year project to develop contaminated lot

Nearly six years after the city of Palouse started remediation on a brownfield site located on the town's Main Street, the city council is finally beginning the process of determining what will be put on the now vacant lot.

Tuesday afternoon, Palouse Mayor Michael Echanove said he expected the Palouse City Council to pass a resolution to surplus the property and open it up to bidders during the council's meeting that night.

The lengthy process began in 2007, when the EPA determined the site contained petroleum hydrocarbons and metals such as lead, arsenic and manganese because it was formally home to a blacksmith and welding shop before it was taken over by the Palouse Producers in 1977. Palouse Producers used the lot until 1985 to store fuel vehicles and distribute bulk fuel, which contributed to the ground contamination.

According to Daily News archives, Palouse Producers was an agricultural chemical and fertilizer company that went bankrupt in the 1990s, and the city acquired the property from the eastern Washington bankruptcy court in a no-cost transaction.
