Cleanup of New Hartford site makes progress

NEW HARTFORD - Crews are rolling along with the environmental cleanup of a 42-acre brownfield site at the Special Metals Corp. manufacturing facility along Middle Settlement Road.

But as the project progresses, New Hartford’s town supervisor is hoping the work can serve a dual purpose and help mitigate potential flooding in the area.

Remediation work at the 42-acre site at 4317 Middle Settlement Road began last summer, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Special Metals’ main plant, rolling plant and pilot plant are located within the brownfield site’s boundaries.
