2nd phase of cleanup at former CTS site to begin next month

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The EPA has expanded the interim cleanup of a cperfund Site.

A news release from the Environmental Protection Agency said the second phase of interim cleanup at the former CTS site in Asheville is set to start next month. The cleanup will use in-situ chemical oxidation to treat contamination in a 1.9-acre area. ISCO involves the injection of chemicals into the ground to oxidize and break down contaminants into harmless byproducts like carbon dioxide and water. The area to be treated by ISCO is north of the area that was successfully treated by electrical resistance heating in 2018.

The EPA said 76 wells spaced on a 30-foot by 40-foot grid pattern will be installed to bedrock, an estimated 60 to 80 feet below ground. An oxidant, potassium permanganate, will be pumped into the ground to break down TCE over a 3- to 5-year period. Monitoring will be conducted to ensure the ISCO treatment strategy reduces the TCE in groundwater by 95 percent to meet the remedial Action Objective.
