Rockford looks to clean up contaminated properties\\By By Jeff Kolkey Rockford Register Star (IL) November 18, 2019 ROCKFORD - City officials would use $275,000 in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency brownfield clean-up grants to eliminate contamination at two city-owned properties, one in hopes of selling it for redevelopment and another to eliminate a blighted building. And in the case of the second building, Rockford is also asking the U.S. military for help demolishing it. City Administrator Todd Cagnoni said removing asbestos from the historic former Rockford Watch Factory building, 325 S. Madison St., could help the city sell it to a new owner who would invest and redevelop it. Rockford placed the “L” shaped, nearly 150-year-old building up for sale in late 2018 with an asking price of $299,000. With a leaky roof and asbestos that must be removed before redevelopment can proceed, the city has not yet found a buyer despite the building’s spectacular view of the Rock River. Officials said a developer could transform the 20,000-square-foot dilapidated structure into a boutique hotel and restaurant, or loft apartments. … For the entire article, see https://www.rrstar.com/news/20191118/rockford-looks-to-clean-up-contaminated-properties -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
