State Wants Base Combed For Unsafe Radiation Move Is Part Of Effort To Block Navy's Plan To Close Groton Facility By JUDY BENSON New London Day (CT) August 16, 2005 Groton - When it comes to assessing the potential for radiological contamination at the Naval Submarine Base, state officials are assuming the worst. They insist that every corner of the 687-acre base will have to be carefully combed for unsafe levels of radiation resulting from past and present human activities, even those dating back 50 years. Just scrutinizing the areas along the waterfront where nuclear-powered submarines have been berthed since the 1950s and the buildings known to have housed activities involving radioactive equipment is not good enough, they say. ?
