[I'm not close enough to Lowry Air Force Base to know whether privatization there is a good deal, but it looks like the Air Force has found a way to "get out of Dodge": be uncooperative. It reminds me to the stories that one of the Car-Talk guys tells about his teen-age son: The young man manages to do such a poor job every time he accedes to doing a chore that his parents prefer to do the work themselves. - LS] Lowry cleanup nears Privatization accord would allow stalled projects to proceed By Todd Hartman Rocky Mountain News August 18, 2005 A dispute over environmental cleanup that has stalled redevelopment of the former Lowry Air Force Base could be rendered moot in weeks with an agreement that will put the work in private hands. The privatization accord, months in the making, would effectively push the Air Force out of the cleanup. That would eliminate several bureaucratic and institutional hurdles that have stalled construction of additional homes and parks at the high-profile east Denver neighborhood. One key impasse that should go by the wayside: How to handle asbestos-contaminated soil on a 22-acre parcel in an area of Lowry known as the Northwest Neighborhood.
