Engine plant use is key issue An interview with DEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy FRED MUSANTE, Editor Stratford Star July 27, 2006 The planned use the town and its developer have for the Stratford Army Engine Plant is now the key issue in the 77-acre site's redevelopment, according to the head of the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). In an interview with the Stratford Star, DEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy said the use will determine what level of environmental cleanup is necessary for the former defense base site. State officials need to know the plans the town and its developer have for the engine plant before they can complete their environmental review, she said. Asked what the DEP has to do to move the project forward, McCarthy said, "This is not a DEP cleanup." She said progress depends on negotiations between the town and its developer, Team Stratford, and the U.S. Army, which still owns the site. ...
