Chemicals used long ago hinder building at naval station todayBy Ryan Huff CONTRA COSTA TIMES August 7, 2006 When sailors needed to get rid of napalm, oil and grenades at the Concord Naval Weapons Station after World War II, they had a simple solution: Just dig a hole and have a bonfire. Sixty years later, the hangover for these toxic practices is becoming clear as the city of Concord tries to redevelop a base laced with harmful contaminants that can lead to cancer and other diseases. A recent Navy report details the dangers of nine contaminated sites in the base's southern inland area, which Congress shut down last year and where the city might approve thousands of homes. The cleanup, to prepare one of the East Bay's last chunks of land available for development, could take nine years and cost the Navy $40 million. ...
