Incoming commander says Air Force wants to take control of Army post 
eyed for private development.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP -- More than 500 acres of lakefront property at 
Selfridge Air National Guard Base being eyed for private development may 
remain under control of the military after all, the base's incoming 
commander says.

Col. Michael Peplinski, the vice commander who will take over 
Selfridge's top job Sunday, said during an interview with The Detroit 
News that the Air Force has expressed interest in keeping the property, 
despite some local officials' interest in selling it for private use.

The land is home to the U.S. Army Garrison, which was closed last year 
by the federal Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC).

"What drives Air Force interest in that property is security concerns 
and encroachment issues should the Army property not be gained by the 
Air Force," Peplinski said.
