Base is not up for grabs just yet
Naval Station winding down

PASCAGOULA - The frigates and cruisers are gone, the base is down to 175 military personnel and the Navy is advertising it to other branches of the military and federal government that might be interested in the location.


Naval Station Pascagoula is still a base, but just barely as it goes through a process that started four days before Katrina when the Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommended to the president that it be closed, local development experts say.

Some lament that it would be nice to have the 437 acres with 324,000 square feet of office and other space to redevelop posthaste, especially since Katrina created such a demand for business locations that Northrop Grumman Ship Systems recently converted retail space at the Singing River Mall into office space.

But George Freeland, with Jackson County's Economic Development Foundation, said the base and its assets aren't up for grabs. Not yet.
