Richardson amends BNAS 'Pine Tree Zone' legislation Speaker of Maine House proposes compromise to gain support of skeptical lawmakers Christopher Cousins Brunswick Times Record February 28, 2006 BRUNSWICK — House Speaker John Richardson, D-Brunswick, recognizing that bringing business-encouraging Pine Tree Development Zones to the greater Brunswick area is not a given, has proposed a compromise designed to ease concerns expressed by lawmakers from other parts of the state. Instead of tapping into existing geographic designations of Pine Tree Zones — a possibility that troubled some lawmakers from farther up the coast because their communities currently lie in the same geographic Pine Tree Zone as Brunswick — Richardson will offer an amendment that will tailor a Brunswick-area zone to the specific needs of a region that faces an inevitable economic downturn resulting from the closure of Brunswick Naval Air Station. Richardson envisions an application process that businesses or developers could use to have their projects considered on a case-by-case basis. The Brunswick Democrat said Monday that he will offer an amendment to this effect this week to legislation that would bring Pine Tree Zones to the area. ...
