Harper Jr. Letter to the editor Newport News Daily Press (VA) March 19, 2006 In response to the March 12 letter ("Other fort lands"), the Hampton Federal Area Development Authority (FADA) is exploring alternatives for the future use of Fort Monroe property, which includes the Big Bethel Reservoir. That reservoir, located on Big Bethel Road, served as the drinking water supply for Fort Monroe many years ago. The fort is now connected to Newport News Waterworks, so this water source is no longer necessary for that purpose - although it is still officially part of Fort Monroe. The Governor's Peninsula Working Group Committee, which was organized to assess the local economic impacts related to the fort's closure, discussed the topic of Big Bethel Reservoir. Representatives from York County, Newport News and Hampton served on that committee. ...
