Impact of BNAS closing detailedElizabeth Dorsey Brunswick Times Record (ME) Masrch 24, 2006 BRUNSWICK - For every civilian job lost on the base, two more private-sector jobs could be lost elsewhere in the region when Brunswick Naval Air Station closes in 2011. According to draft data released last week, indirect job losses could total 1,440, twice the number of civilian employees currently working at the base. In addition, the region could lose $129 million a year in consumer spending as military families leave the state. These are two of the findings gathered for the Defense Employment and Transitions Steering Committee, a subcommittee of the Coastal Counties Workforce Board, which is analyzing the base closure's expected impact on housing, businesses, schools and the labor market. The group — which was awarded grant funds from the U.S. Dept. of Labor for the work — plans to compile its findings into a final report to be released in April. The data also will be used to develop a strategic re-employment plan for laid-off workers. ...
