State asks for runway contract extension

WASHINGTON--The U.S. Air Force and Gov. Frank Murkowski's administration 
are negotiating to extend the military's contribution to maintenance of 
the Galena runway.

An agreement may be reached as early as Thursday, said Master Sgt. Tim 
Hoffman, spokesman for the Alaska Command at Elmendorf Air Force Base 
near Anchorage.

Hoffman couldn't release details yet.

"They're still negotiating the contract," he said Monday.

The Air Force said last month it would drop the maintenance contract as 
of March 31. Galena has had an Air Force presence for decades, but the 
Base Closure and Realignment Commission last year decided the military 
should pull out
