Submitted to Pentagon, plan for Oceana lines up detailsBy JON W. GLASS The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk) April 1, 2006 VIRGINIA BEACH — City and state officials sent a plan to the Pentagon on Friday that they maintain satisfies federal demands for keeping fighter jets at Oceana Naval Air Station. The Defense Department’s inspector general has until June 1 to decide whether he agrees. At stake is Virginia Beach’s largest employer and the city’s historic and social ties to the Navy. It’s unclear what will happen to Oceana’s jets if the inspector general rules that the plan does not comply with the demands of the federal Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission . In that case, BRAC had recommended that the jets be moved to a former Navy base in Florida, but leaders in that community have said they don’t want the planes. The plan responds to the BRAC order issued in August requiring Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and the state to halt and “roll back” development that the panel said compromised pilot training and safety at Oceana. ...
