Joliet Arsenal cleanup is ahead of schedule Contaminated soil: Project is slated to end in 2015 By Kim Smith Joliet Herald News (IL) May 4, 2006 WILMINGTON - Cleaning up more than 23,000 acres of contaminated soil is a lot of dirty work. When the project to clean up the property formerly known as the Joliet Arsenal started 10 years ago, it was slated to end in 2015. Now, due to a lot of teamwork between the U.S. Army, the U.S. and Illinois environmental agencies, generous federal funding and a group of volunteers known as the RAB (Restoration Advisory Board), the project could come to end late next year. "It will take us about another year to turn all the properties over to the U.S. Forest Service," said Art Holz, site manager for the project at a special anniversary ceremony held at the U.S. Army headquarters in Wilmington. ...
