Solving the solvent problem Pumps to clean trichloroethylene from groundwater at old El Toro base. By JEFF ROWE THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER (CA) October 27, 2006 In about a week, switches will be thrown and the last major pollution remediation effort will begin at the old El Toro base. Pumps will start drawing up solvent-laced water from rock, sand and clay in a plume that extends about four miles under the base and into the neighboring community of Woodbridge. It's the legacy of years of scrubbing aircraft parts with a solvent called trichloroethylene, TCE, which often poured into the ground. Over the years, rainwater carried the solvent into the earth and now the plume ranges in depth from about 50 to 200 feet on the base and from 200 to 700 feet off the base. ...
