Cecil Field referendum rejected

Opponents of the hotly debated referendum to return Cecil Field to the Navy celebrated Tuesday night as incomplete election results showed the measure being shot down by Duval County voters.

Guarded enthusiasm at 9:30 p.m. had turned into jubiliation by 11:30 p.m. "We're way beyond cautious optimism - we've won," Better Westside Project spokesman John Daigle said.

An energized Mayor John Peyton said private development may now proceed unabated at the Cecil Commerce Center and about 8,000 Westside residents must no longer fear the loss or devaluation of their property.
