Beach files suits against BRAC, Rumsfeld over OceanaBy DEIRDRE FERNANDES AND JACK DORSEY The Virginian-Pilot November 9, 2006 VIRGINIA BEACH - The city's chances of keeping Oceana Naval Air Station improved dramatically Tuesday when North Florida voters rejected the fighter jets' return to Jacksonville. But Virginia Beach isn't willing to risk it. The city, along with the commonwealth of Virginia, has filed two lawsuits against the Department of Defense and the Inspector General. One suit claims that the 2005 Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission overstepped its authority when it ordered the master jet base moved to the former Cecil Field in Jacksonville. Cecil Field is no longer a military installation, the suit contends. The other lawsuit challenges the Inspector General's decision that Virginia Beach failed to comply with the commission's requirements for keeping the jets at Oceana, including condemning and buying property that encroached on the base. ...
