Middle course can be charted for Navy schoolEditorial The Athens Banner-Herald (GA) November 11, 2006 Whatever happens with the redevelopment of the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School site at Prince and Oglethorpe avenues, one thing is certain - there will be some provision of services to the homeless associated with the redevelopment plan. But that doesn't necessarily mean the 58-acre tract will - or more importantly, should - simply be turned over to the homeless. It's true the Base Closure Community Redevelopment and Homeless Assistance Act of 1994 requires that military base reuse plans address the needs of the homeless in the area of the base. It's also true that reuse proposals submitted to the Local Redevelopment Authority by a couple of social service agencies suggest using some of the Navy school tract for transitional housing for the homeless when the school closes for good in 2011 and moves to Rhode Island. ...
