Naval station closing already being felt in communityBy BRAD CROCKER The Mississippi Press November 15, 2006 PASCAGOULA -- Although Naval Station Pascagoula officially closed this week and the transfer of the property back to the state before determining Singing River Island's next tenant has been postponed, the departure of sailors, ships and other base activities have already affected local communities. Over the past 14 years, the naval station -- which was home to 900 sailors before the Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommended its closing in August 2005 -- accounted for an estimated total annual economic impact of $100 million, in addition to the sailors stationed here who helped in many community events. ...
