Future of region's historic houses remains hazy By Kelly Rayburn Inside Bay Area/Oakland Tribune (CA) January 14, 2007ALAMEDA - The 18 homes around the Admiral's House on the former U.S. Naval Air Station in Alameda are known as the "Big Whites." They were built on sprawling lots before U.S. involvement in World War II to house senior officers. Nowadays, some are rented out. Others are empty. Their future is uncertain."So dirty you can't even see in it," said Dick Rutter, as he tried to peer through the window of one of the old homes, an empty one. Rutter, an Alameda architect who served in the Navy and was stationed at the air station during the Vietnam War, is a member of the Alameda Architectural Preservation Society and takes particular interest in the old base. For years, he and others have advocated saving many of the historic structures at the former Air Station, now called Alameda Point. ...
