NEW: Republicans push to pass $5.6B BRAC bill Gary Martin San Antonio Express-News (TX) February 9, 2007WASHINGTON - Republican lawmakers are pushing Democrats to do what they could not: Pass a 2007 spending bill with $5.6 billion for base closure projects. House Democrats approved their version of the bill earlier this month, but reduced BRAC funding to $2.5 billion. The remaining $3.1 billion was redirected to education and health care programs. As the Senate begins debate on the bill, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, is asking Democratic leaders to restore the $3.1 billion, part of which will be used to move U.S. troops from overseas to domestic bases, like Fort Bliss near El Paso. The funds also would be used for base closure-related consolidations, including the transfer of all military medical training for enlisted personnel at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, and the expansion of Brooke Army Medical Center. ...
