City goes for gold on Treasure Island Development dreams take shape in the middle of the bay By Steve Schmidt SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE (CA) February 12, 2007SAN FRANCISCO - First, they dumped rocks the size of jalopies into San Francisco Bay. Next, they shipped in sand from Gold Rush country upstream. Out of the choppy waters rose a 400-acre patch of dirt dubbed Treasure Island. Workers created the island in the late 1930s. It became the site of a world's fair, complete with a popular light show that could be seen for miles. Now San Francisco officials hope to again transform it into a shining city on a fill. ...
